Innovative Technology Field Report

During my studies, I created a field report on a recent technological innovation. I chose to conduct my field test on Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically focusing on Chat GPT.

Project Overview

In this field report, I explored the instructional design capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI). I began by reflecting on the most time-consuming or challenging tasks for instructional designers, which led me to examine ChatGPT’s ability to guide me through designing a logo.

Overall, my experience with this technology was largely positive. Having prior knowledge of ChatGPT’s effectiveness in writing and editing (Bolick & Silva, 2023), I was curious to see how it would handle a request involving visual elements, something beyond its usual text-based functions. It was especially interesting because I lack extensive experience in graphic design, so I needed specific, clear guidance to ensure I could complete the project successfully.

How did this shape my perspective on AI?

Conducting this test on the technology positively shifted my perspective on AI. I was surprised by the specificity of the results and impressed by how ChatGPT tailored its examples to the information I provided about my industry and objectives. It refined its output based on my feedback, offered both visual and textual examples, and effectively guided my design process until I was satisfied with the results. This demonstrates that ChatGPT not only responds well to user requests but can also create engaging learning experiences, especially when the user adopts the role of a learner (Bolick & Silva, 2023).

Evaluation and Recommendations

  • I found Chat GPT helpful in streamlining aspects of the design process, such as brainstorming ideas, providing structure, and generating initial mockups for inspiration.

  • Chat GPT offered clear guidance and detailed responses.

  • I was impressed with the adaptability to new inputs. As I refined my request, Chat GPT was able to adjust and generate designs and rationale that more closely aligned to my goals.

  • ChatGPT proved useful in offering design elements, such as symbols for progress and movement, which was critical for the success of designing this logo.

  • Without clear instructions on the complexity of the design, the initial mockup was too busy. This suggests that providing clearer constraints and more focused specifications might help Chat GPT avoid including unnecessary detail.

  • Providing too much context caused Chat GPT to emphasize elements that were irrelevant to my specific audience. This highlights the need to consider what context is important to provide, as well as a need for more explicit instructions (Biswas, 2023).

Based on my experience, I would recommend the following:

  • Use Chat GPT or other AI technology for specific, targeted tasks. Given that ChatGPT can generate a wide range of responses, it’s most effective when you provide precise instructions and focus on one task at a time (Biswas, 2023).

  • Consider running multiple iterations of a task to refine your results. By asking for adjusted outputs based on specific feedback, the user can ensure the result aligns with their needs (Weng, Ye, & Ng, 2024).

  • Be prepared to adapt as you gather insights and outputs.

  • Provide clear instructions, context, and expectations in initial prompts. This will help guide the technology more effectively, especially for creative tasks or tasks that have specialized needs (Biswas, 2023).

Examples

Focusing on one task at a time and providing specific instructions and context (ex. logo concept creation or content generation) can yield better results. AI has access to many resources and can pull information that might be too broad.

Running multiple iterations proved extremely effective in my specific field test. Once I received the initial mockup, I knew that I needed to request another iteration, as it was not what I had initially envisioned.

I adapted my approach and input as I received responses from AI, which eventually resulted in information that was helpful for my final design.

I did not initially consider requesting elements that represented progress and forward movement until Chat GPT provided the rationale for the elements in its mockup.

Result

AI attempts to meet the need for increased efficiency and intelligent automation across various industries. By handling tasks that require significant effort, AI reduces time, improves accuracy, and boosts productivity. In many settings, there is a high demand for quicker task completion without compromising quality. AI addresses this need by completing time-consuming processes, allowing users to focus on more complex responsibilities that cannot be automated. It also helps organizations scale their operations, as AI can process and optimize large volumes of work without sacrificing quality.

Through trial and error, I was able to take the results from my field test and finalize a design. ChatGPT provided a useful list of symbols (arrows, lines, etc.), typography suggestions, and abstract shapes to incorporate into the design. This additional input was exactly what was needed to help refine the design further. The final logo was approved and successfully uploaded to the LMS System.

This is a sample from my field test. My comprehensive report provides an in-depth analysis of the steps I took to conduct the test, my rationale for choosing this technology, along with evaluations, recommendations, and the outcomes observed.
